I agree with folk hippy. The police were out of control at this show. Does not detract from the quality of this fine recording though. Every thing is very well played.

I'll bump this up to a 3.5 for Like a Rolling Stone...Phil's the Bomb!!!!

Subject: Cops dressed as hippies
Apparently, the local drug task force and DEA had nothing better to do on this day because they were out in force at this show. Cops in dreads and tie-dies were pulling smokers right out of the crowd, handcuffing them in the aisles, and hauling them off. Those bastards were seriously going down row by row looking for people to arrest. A giant armored car with water cannons was parked out front, and a jail bus was sitting right outside of the entrance to drive our unlucky comrades away. It was disgusting, and indicative of the fascist police state we live in.

I, and hopefully the Dead, will never return to this venue again. Fuck you Nissan Pavilion and Bristow, VA.

Luckily, at my next show, whose venue shall remain nameless, there wasn't a cop in sight, and everybody was having a safe time.

As for the performance itself, I've never liked Warren with the Dead. Somehow he always managed to take the Dead's songs and morph them into Allman Bros-esque tunes. I like country Dead and wooden Dead, but the overpowering Gov't Mule-style detracted from their original sound.

Some good songs were played, but no Eyes, Other One, Estimated, Scarlet>Fire, or real jam vehicle. Nothing spectacular. I remember the whole crowd went wild during the tremendous ending of Casey Jones. The girl in front of me freaked out when they started playing Loose Lucy and got on her cellphone to call someone to brag. There was a guy who looked exactly like David Crosby a few seats away. He had Crosby's white hair and mustache and was wearing a flowing white garment. I had just got into the Dead a couple years before, and Workingman's Dead was a popular album with me at the time, so this was a good show to see I suppose (four songs from the album were played this night, plus Hard to Handle). The Samson & Delilah was really hot.

Overall, not a great show. I was overjoyed when I went to my first Ratdog shows, and now with Furthur, the music is going in a much better direction. I love Gov't Mule and Warren's playing, but I would rather see him as an opening act rather than playing with the band.

Performance 3/5
